The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office (FO) in Region XI has announced the winners of its first ever short film-making competition, which carries the theme ‘DSWD: May Malasakit.’

‘Katumanan sa Pangandoy (Fulfilling Dreams),’ a short film by Rexor Amancio featuring the impact of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) of the DSWD to the lives of poor families, was chosen as the grand prize winner during the film festival’s awards night held at the Apo View Hotel last July 31. Amancio brought home the grand cash prize of P40,000.

On the other hand, a film by Michael Joshua Robilla, which features one of the Department’s centers and institutions, brought home the second prize of P25,000. Titled ‘Alyas Inday Jenny,’ Robilla’s film showed how the DSWD’s Home for the Girls and Women in Davao City helped its residents find new hope and eventually renew their lives.

Meanwhile, Ramil Salon Jr.’s ‘Bayani,’ won the third prize of P15,000. The film highlights the impact of the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (Kalahi-CIDSS) Program of the DSWD in communities.

Winners of three consolation prizes amounting to P5,000 include ‘Itong Tula’ by John Jeus Yagon, ‘Alaga’ by Rosebie May Sanchez, and ‘Liwanag’ by Earle Evita Mae Galindo.

‘Itong Tula,’ a film about the Department’s Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU), also brought home the People’s Choice Award of P5,000.

FO XI’s film festival aimed to promote the different programs and services of the Department and at the same time support young film enthusiasts and amateur film-makers in showcasing their talent. Launched in May, the festival received a total of sixteen short film entries.

The field office also conducted a public viewing of the entries from July 19-21 at Cinematique Davao, which was participated by its officials and staff, partner non-government organizations, and members of the academe, specifically students taking up Social Sciences courses.

Meanwhile, the board of judges was composed of officials and staff from FO XI and DSWD Central Office, renowned local film makers, and representatives from the field office’s partner organizations. The entries were judged based on their relevance to the theme (40%), technicalities (30%), and aesthetics (30%).

DSWD Sec. Judy M. Taguiwalo extended her congratulations to the winners of the film festival and to FO XI for the success of the conduct of the competition.

“I want to congratulate all winners of the film festival who featured the programs and services of the Department in a creative and engaging way. These short films will help us communicate our social programs and services to poor Filipinos more effectively,” she said.

“I also want to acknowledge our FO XI for the success of the activity and for recognizing how powerful popular media is in getting our message across of providing compassionate service to those in need,” Sec. Taguiwalo said.
